AC repair and installation in Glen Ellyn, IL

When the AC goes out on a 95° July afternoon in Glen Ellyn, the upstairs bedrooms hit 90° by dinner. JR Plumbing Heating & Air installs, repairs, and tunes up Carrier, Lennox, Trane, Goodman, and Rheem residential central AC across the west Chicago suburbs. Same-day service for most calls in cooling season. Call before noon and we're usually out the same day.

The summer call we get every July is the same. “The AC is running, but it's blowing warm air.” Nine times out of ten that's either a refrigerant leak, a frozen evaporator coil (often from a dirty filter restricting airflow), or a failed capacitor on the outdoor condenser. All three are fixable on the first visit if we get the call early.

Central AC repair: common failures

Most Glen Ellyn and Wheaton homes run a split-system central AC. An outdoor condenser unit and an indoor evaporator coil mounted above the furnace. Common failures by component:

  • Capacitor failure. The condenser hums but the fan won't spin. Cheap part, fast fix.
  • Contactor pitting. System short cycles or won't engage. Common after 8 to 10 years.
  • Refrigerant leak. System slowly loses cooling capacity. We leak-test and locate the source before adding refrigerant, because topping off a leaking system is throwing money at the wall.
  • Frozen evaporator coil. Almost always a dirty filter or low refrigerant. Shut the system off, replace the filter, and call us.
  • Compressor failure. The big one. On a 12+ year unit, compressor failure usually means replacement, not repair.

Central AC installation

For replacements we install Carrier, Lennox, Trane, Goodman, and Rheem central AC units. SEER2 14.3 is the minimum for new installations in Illinois. We install 14.3 through 18+ SEER depending on the home and the utility rebate window. Sizing is done by Manual J load calculation, not “match the old unit,” because oversized AC short-cycles and doesn't dehumidify properly in our muggy Chicago summers. Permit pulled, inspection scheduled, warranty registered, all included.

Seasonal tune-ups

Get the AC tune-up done in April or early May, before the first 88° day forces every HVAC company in DuPage County into a two-week backlog. We clean the outdoor coil (a winter's worth of cottonwood and pollen kills capacity), check refrigerant pressures, test the capacitor and contactor under load, verify the condensate drain is clear, and check the indoor coil and blower. About 45 minutes per visit.

Thermostat upgrades

Most calls to upgrade an old mercury or low-end digital thermostat are simple. Ecobee, Nest, and Honeywell T-series all install in 30 minutes if the home has a C-wire. If it doesn't, we run one, no drywall damage. If your AC works fine but feels uneven floor-to-floor, sometimes a smart thermostat with a remote sensor in the upstairs bedroom fixes what a duct overhaul would have cost five times as much to address.

Air Conditioning — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does AC repair cost in Glen Ellyn?
Costs vary by job. Capacitors and contactors are quick fixes. Refrigerant leak repair plus recharge takes more time. Compressor replacement on a 10+ year unit is rarely worth it, and we will quote replacement instead so you know both numbers. Call us with the specifics and we will give you the price in writing before any work starts.
How long does a central AC unit last?
A residential central AC in a Glen Ellyn home lasts 12 to 15 years with annual tune-ups. Without maintenance, expect 8 to 10 years. The compressor is the part that determines the unit's lifespan, and it dies faster on systems that have been running with low refrigerant.
My AC is running but blowing warm air. What is wrong?
Most likely a frozen evaporator coil (dirty filter or low refrigerant), a refrigerant leak, a failed capacitor on the outdoor unit, or a tripped breaker on the condenser. First step: change the filter and shut the system off for two to three hours to thaw any ice. If it is still warm after that, call 630-545-2619.
When should I schedule AC maintenance?
April or early May. You want the tune-up done before the season starts so any failing parts get caught before they leave you without cooling in July. Spring tune-up and fall furnace tune-up is the standard maintenance rhythm for west-suburb homes.
Do you install variable-speed (inverter) AC systems?
Yes. Carrier Greenspeed, Lennox SL series, and Trane XV series inverter systems modulate capacity instead of cycling on and off, which improves comfort and dehumidification, especially on Chicago summer days when the humidity is the real problem, not the temperature. They cost more up front but the comfort difference is real.

Twice now JR Plumbing has got me out of a jamb in emergency situations. I had a collapsed sewer line under my basement floor and they were able to identify the problem and repair it quickly (and patch over the foundation floor). Would recommend as they are trustworthy and reasonably priced.

I broke my toilet’s compression valve and had to turn off the water to the entire house. I called JR Plumbing and they were so kind to fit me into their busy schedule the same day. Frank and his team are exactly the kind of folks you want showing up.

The owner, Frank and his colleague, Alex came out to install a sink, garbage disposal, and vent hood. Also, they replaced a leaky outdoor spigot and a leaky faucet. They are very easy to work with. I highly recommend them for their great work and fair pricing.
