Residential electrician in Glen Ellyn, IL

Most homeowners don't need a 200-amp panel upgrade. They need an outlet that works in the kitchen, a ceiling fan installed in the master bedroom, or a dedicated 20-amp circuit for the new induction range. JR Plumbing Heating & Air handles the residential electrical work that actually comes up in west-suburb homes, day in and day out.

Most of what we get called for is a 30 to 90 minute job for a licensed crew. Outlets, switches, fixtures, fans, GFCI replacement, dedicated circuits. If we're already at your house for a remodel or a plumbing call, the electrical add-on is usually the same visit.

Light fixtures, ceiling fans, and recessed lighting

We install pendant lights, chandeliers, sconces, ceiling fans, and can/recessed lighting. The most common call is a homeowner who buys a fixture they like, finds out the existing box is undersized for it, and needs someone who can swap the box, support the weight properly, and ground the new fixture to current code. We do that work all the time. Heavy-fan installs get an old-work fan-rated box, not a hope-and-pray hanger.

Outlets, switches, GFCI and AFCI upgrades

Older Glen Ellyn homes (anything pre-1985) often have ungrounded outlets with two-prong receptacles. Modern code requires GFCI protection in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry, garages, and outdoor outlets, and AFCI on most living-space circuits. We replace failed receptacles, install GFCI/AFCI where it's missing, and swap out the loose, blackened, or singed outlets that show up in remodels. If a receptacle is warm to the touch, stop using it and call us. That's a loose connection waiting to become a fire.

Dedicated circuits for appliances

New induction range, EV charger, central humidifier, beverage fridge in the basement bar. Every one of those needs its own circuit. We run new 20-amp and 30-amp circuits from the panel, properly sized for the load, with the breaker matched to the wire gauge (which a lot of DIY work gets wrong). EV chargers in particular need a 40 or 50-amp 240V circuit and a proper load calc on the panel so you don't end up tripping the main every time the dryer and EV run together.

Troubleshooting and general repair

Half of a breaker that doesn't make sense. A light switch that buzzes. Flickering recessed cans. A breaker that trips every time the microwave and toaster run together. These are the calls where you want someone who has been in panels for 25 years, not someone running a checklist. We trace it, fix the underlying problem, and explain what we found.

Electrical — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does electrical work cost in Glen Ellyn?
Costs vary by job. Outlet and switch replacement is a quick visit. Ceiling fan installation depends on box and ceiling height. New dedicated circuits depend on panel distance and wall access. We give every customer the number in writing before any work starts. Call us with the specifics and we will quote it.
Are you licensed for electrical work?
Yes. We are registered to perform residential electrical work and pull permits with the Village of Glen Ellyn, and we are fully insured. Our Illinois plumbing licenses are displayed in the footer; electrical contractor registration runs through the village, and we are happy to share proof of registration and insurance before any job.
Do I need a permit for an outlet or fixture replacement?
For straight like-for-like replacement (existing outlet swapped for new outlet on the same circuit), no permit is required by the Village of Glen Ellyn. For new circuits, panel work, or service upgrades, yes. We pull the permit for those and handle the inspection.
My breaker keeps tripping. What does that mean?
Breakers trip for three reasons. Overload (too much load on one circuit), short circuit (hot touching neutral or ground somewhere), or a failed breaker. Resetting a tripping breaker repeatedly is dangerous. Call us. If a GFCI keeps tripping, that is usually a moisture issue or a failed device, not the GFCI itself.
Can you install an EV charger?
Yes. We install Level 2 EV chargers (typically 40 to 50 amp, 240V) and we do the load calc on the existing panel first to make sure it can handle the additional load. Most Glen Ellyn homes with 200-amp service can support an EV charger. Older 100-amp services usually need a panel upgrade first.

Twice now JR Plumbing has got me out of a jamb in emergency situations. I had a collapsed sewer line under my basement floor and they were able to identify the problem and repair it quickly (and patch over the foundation floor). Would recommend as they are trustworthy and reasonably priced.

I broke my toilet’s compression valve and had to turn off the water to the entire house. I called JR Plumbing and they were so kind to fit me into their busy schedule the same day. Frank and his team are exactly the kind of folks you want showing up.

The owner, Frank and his colleague, Alex came out to install a sink, garbage disposal, and vent hood. Also, they replaced a leaky outdoor spigot and a leaky faucet. They are very easy to work with. I highly recommend them for their great work and fair pricing.
