Furnace repair and heating service in Glen Ellyn, IL

When the furnace gives up at 11 p.m. in February and the house starts dropping a degree an hour, you don't want to be calling a 1-800 number. JR Plumbing Heating & Air is the local heating company on N Main St. in Glen Ellyn. We install, repair, and tune up Carrier, Lennox, Trane, Goodman, and Rheem residential furnaces, and Frank has been doing it for 25+ years.

The two heating calls we get most often are a furnace that won't fire on a cold morning, and a furnace that's running but barely keeping up. The first is usually an ignition or sensor problem we can fix on the first visit. The second is usually a dirty filter, a failing blower motor, or a furnace past its 15-year mark and losing capacity.

Furnace repair: what fails and when

In most Glen Ellyn and Wheaton homes, residential furnaces are 80% AFUE Goodman, Carrier, or Lennox units installed in the basement or a closet off the mudroom. Common failures by age:

  • 5 to 10 years: flame sensor, hot-surface igniter, condensate drain clogs (on 90%+ units).
  • 10 to 15 years: inducer motor, blower motor capacitor, thermostat compatibility, gas valve.
  • 15+ years: heat exchanger cracks, control board failures, loss of capacity. This is when replacement starts beating repair on long-run cost.

Furnace installation in the west suburbs

For replacements we install Carrier, Lennox, Trane, Goodman, and Rheem furnaces. 80% AFUE for tight budgets and venting constraints. 95%+ AFUE condensing units where it makes sense. We size for the actual home, not the spec on the old unit (which was probably oversized when it was installed in 1998). Pulling the Village of Glen Ellyn permit, scheduling the inspection, and registering the manufacturer warranty are all included. You don't handle paperwork.

Annual furnace cleaning and tune-ups

Two things kill furnaces early. Dirty filters that run too long, and never getting the burners and heat exchanger inspected. We run a fall tune-up every year. Clean the burners, check combustion, verify the inducer pulls proper draft, test the flame sensor, swap the filter, test the safety circuit, and do a CO check at the registers. Takes about an hour. If something is degrading, we'll tell you in October instead of you finding out in January.

Combustion safety and CO testing

If you have a gas furnace, you should have working carbon monoxide detectors on every floor. We test combustion on every tune-up because Glen Ellyn's housing stock includes a lot of homes with shared flues, tight retrofits, and questionable past work. If the combustion ratio is off or the heat exchanger has stress cracks, you need to know.

Heating — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does furnace repair cost in Glen Ellyn?
Most furnace repairs in the Glen Ellyn area land between $175 and $650 depending on the part. Flame sensors and igniters are at the low end; blower motors, inducer motors, and gas valves at the high end. We diagnose for a flat fee, put the number in writing before any work starts, and credit the diagnostic fee toward the repair.
How long does a furnace last?
A residential gas furnace in a Glen Ellyn home typically lasts 15 to 20 years with annual maintenance. Without maintenance, expect 10 to 12 years. When repairs start exceeding a meaningful share of replacement cost and the unit is over 15 years old, replacement is the better long-run move.
When should I schedule furnace maintenance?
September through early November. You want the tune-up done before the first cold snap forces the system to run hard. Spring also works for AC tune-ups, and we do both as one fall and one spring visit for combined-system homes.
Do you install high-efficiency (95%+ AFUE) furnaces?
Yes. We install Carrier, Lennox, Trane, Rheem, and Goodman condensing furnaces where the venting and condensate drain situation supports it. In older Glen Ellyn homes with masonry chimneys you sometimes have to address venting before going to 95%+, and we walk you through both options.
My furnace will not turn on. What should I check first?
Check the breaker, the thermostat batteries, and the switch on the side of the furnace (it looks like a light switch and sometimes gets bumped). If those are fine and the furnace still will not fire, call 630-545-2619. Do not keep hitting reset. Repeated ignition attempts can flood the burner with gas.

Twice now JR Plumbing has got me out of a jamb in emergency situations. I had a collapsed sewer line under my basement floor and they were able to identify the problem and repair it quickly (and patch over the foundation floor). Would recommend as they are trustworthy and reasonably priced.

I broke my toilet’s compression valve and had to turn off the water to the entire house. I called JR Plumbing and they were so kind to fit me into their busy schedule the same day. Frank and his team are exactly the kind of folks you want showing up.

The owner, Frank and his colleague, Alex came out to install a sink, garbage disposal, and vent hood. Also, they replaced a leaky outdoor spigot and a leaky faucet. They are very easy to work with. I highly recommend them for their great work and fair pricing.
